Notes on an after party
An after party that feels spontaneous has usually been rehearsed. The looseness is the product, and like everything else it is built.

The dinner ends and the room has to become a different room in under twenty minutes, usually while three hundred people are standing in it. That transition is the whole design: everything before it is a wedding, everything after it is a party, and the seam between them should be invisible.
So we design the seam first. The lighting state that drops as the last speech ends, the bar that opens on the other side of the room to pull the crowd, the first track chosen to be loud enough to answer the question of what happens now.

Three moments, then let it run
A night needs three set pieces and no more: an opening, something at the midpoint when energy dips, and a finale. Programme more than that and guests start waiting for the next thing instead of dancing.
Everything else in the night is unscheduled on purpose.

And then it ends — earlier than anyone wants, which is how you know it worked.
